Summer in Northern New Jersey is underway! While local playgrounds are always a hit, sometimes you want to venture a little further and discover something new, something that truly connects your little ones with the wonders of nature. At Wondernest Play, we believe that the best classrooms are often found outdoors, and our region is bursting with incredible, sometimes overlooked, spots perfect for family adventures.


This summer, let's go beyond the familiar swings and slides and explore some of Northern NJ's nature-rich destinations. These are places where imagination blossoms, tiny hands get delightfully dirty, and family memories are made.

1. Trailside Nature & Science Center (Mountainside, Union County)


Located within the sprawling Watchung Reservation, the Trailside Nature & Science Center is a fantastic hub for natural exploration. This center offers a wonderful blend of indoor exhibits and outdoor adventures, perfect for a hot summer day.

  • Interactive Exhibits: Step inside to discover fascinating displays on local wildlife, geology, and ecosystems. There is an incredible exhibit about the Lenape Native Americans, and kids will love the Children's Discovery Room with hands-on activities. It's a great way to cool off and learn!

  • Accessible Trails: The Watchung Reservation boasts over 13 miles of trails, many of which are well-shaded and relatively flat, making them suitable for families with carriers or sturdy strollers. Explore woodlands, fields, and streams right from the center.

  • Educational Programs: Trailside frequently offers engaging programs for various age groups, from sensory walks for toddlers to nature workshops for older kids. Check their calendar before you go!

2. Laurelwood Arboretum (Wayne, Passaic County)


Escape to the serene beauty of Laurelwood Arboretum, a stunning 30-acre botanical garden and woodland. This unique non-profit arboretum offers a tranquil and inspiring setting for families to explore.

  • Varied Plant Collections: Wander through diverse collections of rhododendrons, azaleas, conifers, and other unusual plants. The vibrant colors and interesting textures provide a sensory feast for young explorers.

  • Peaceful Ponds and Streams: Discover charming bridges and peaceful water features. It’s a wonderful spot to observe dragonflies, listen to birds, and enjoy a moment of calm.

  • Easy Walking Paths: The arboretum features well-maintained, generally flat paths that are easy for little legs or strollers, making it accessible for families with young children.

  • Art in Nature: Keep an eye out for unique sculptures and art installations tucked within the landscapes, adding another layer of discovery to your visit.

3. Cora Hartshorn Arboretum and Bird Sanctuary (Short Hills, Essex County)


The Cora Hartshorn Arboretum offers a delightful blend of woodland trails and educational opportunities on a more intimate scale, focusing on local ecology and birdlife.

  • Focus on Birds: As a bird sanctuary, it's an excellent place to introduce children to local bird species. Encourage them to listen for different calls and look for nests. The arboretum often has bird feeders that attract a variety of feathered friends.

  • Magical Woodland Trails: The trails are well-maintained and feel truly enchanting, perfect for imaginative play and little legs. They wind through a mature forest, offering plenty of shade.

  • Educational Building: A small building often features exhibits and restrooms, making it convenient for families.



4. Shaded Hiking Trails for Little Legs


When the sun is high, finding a shady trail is key! Northern NJ has several excellent options that offer cool relief and engaging environments for children.

  • Trotter's Tract/Essex Fells Preserve (Essex Fells, Essex County): This local gem offers peaceful, wooded trails that are generally flat and easy to navigate for families. There is a small stream for wading as well! Tip: put 1 Oak Ln, Essex Fells in your GPS to find the trail entrance.

  • Alonzo F. Bonsal Wildlife Preserve (Montclair, Essex County): Just minutes from the heart of Montclair, this hidden treasure is a fantastic "starter hike" for families. It features accessible paths, a charming bridge over a stream (Pearl Brook), and plenty of shade. Our September Wondernest Hike will be here, so get a preview!

  • Garret Mountain Reservation (Paterson, Passaic County): While known for its expansive views, Garret Mountain also has plenty of wooded trails that offer ample shade. You can find easier, wider paths or venture onto more winding, natural trails. It’s a diverse park where you can choose your adventure, from a quick stroll to a longer exploration.

Making the Most of Your Outdoor Adventure


No matter which hidden gem you choose to explore, remember to:

  • Pack Essentials: Water, snacks, sunscreen, insect repellent, and a small first-aid kit are always good to have.

  • Dress for Success: Light, breathable clothing, hats, and sturdy shoes are key.

  • Embrace the Unplanned: Let your child lead the way sometimes. The best discoveries often happen when you least expect them.

  • Leave No Trace: Teach your children to respect nature by staying on trails and taking out everything you bring in.
